How to Choose Your Dress Size Online: A Fit Guide

Choosing the right size online is easier when you know what to check. This guide explains how to measure yourself, read a dress listing and choose a size, whether you are buying new with tags or pre-loved designer dresses from Lexi, Winona, Nicholas, Nicola Finetti and more.

Measure yourself first

Use a soft tape measure and measure your bust, waist and hips. Measure over light clothing, keep the tape snug but not tight, and note your height if you are choosing a long dress. Write the numbers down so you can compare them with the size on a dress.

Read the listing carefully

Size: each dress shows the size available. Many of our dresses are one of a kind, so there may be one size only.
Condition: new with tags or pre-loved is shown on each dress.
Fabric and cut: stretch fabrics are more forgiving than structured or lined designs. Bias cut and fitted styles depend more on exact size.
Details: look at the description for notes on the fit, lining and fabric.

Sizes vary between designers

Every designer cuts differently, so a size 8 in one label may fit differently in another. Compare your own measurements with a dress you already own and love, and think about which designer cuts suit you.

Think about alterations

A tailor can shorten a hem, adjust straps or take in a waist. Many designer dresses are easier to alter by taking them in than letting them out, so if you are between sizes choose the larger one.
