The Melbourne Cup Carnival is four race days over eight days, and each one has its own style tradition. Here is what to wear to each day in 2026, with designer dresses from Lexi, Winona, Nicholas, Nicola Finetti and more, all below RRP and shipped free by express post Australia-wide.

2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival dates

  • Derby Day: Saturday 31 October
  • Melbourne Cup Day: Tuesday 3 November
  • Oaks Day: Thursday 5 November
  • Stakes Day: Saturday 7 November

Order by the Monday of the week before your race day so your dress arrives with time to spare for a fitting with your shoes and headpiece.

Derby Day: black and white

Derby Day is the most classic day of the carnival, and the tradition is monochrome. Think crisp lace, sharp tailoring and a statement headpiece. Black and white never dates, so these are pieces you will wear again to weddings and cocktail events.

Melbourne Cup Day: bold colour

Cup Day is the big one, and anything goes. This is the day for bright colour, prints and statement shapes. Pick one hero colour and keep your accessories simple so the dress does the talking.

Oaks Day: florals and soft pastels

Oaks Day celebrates the fillies, and the style is soft and feminine: florals, pastels and pretty details. Midi lengths and flowing fabrics look beautiful on the lawn.

Stakes Day: relaxed and bright

Stakes Day closes the carnival with a relaxed, family feel. Bright colours are still welcome, but the mood is lighter. A pretty midi with comfortable heels is perfect.

Finish the look: headwear

A headpiece is part of race day tradition, and it pulls the whole outfit together. Our Morgan & Taylor Laurel Leaf Headpiece in metallic gold works with black and white on Derby Day and with bright colour on Cup Day. See all race day headwear.

Race day dress tips

  • Check your enclosure’s dress code. Members’ and hospitality areas have stricter standards than the general lawns, so check the VRC website before you choose a length.
  • Think about your shoes. You will be standing on grass for hours. Block heels or wedges are kinder than stilettos.
  • Bring a layer. Melbourne weather in November can swing from hot to cold in an afternoon.
  • Get the fit right before you buy. Every dress page has a Size & Fit tab, and you can email stylist@dressedup.com.au with your measurements if you are between sizes.
